A very popular puzzle among math teachers. Indeed, it appears on a number of very popular lists!
I decided to take a formal look at it only very recently and to my big surprise I quickly discovered that the treatment of this puzzle in the official literature only scratches the surface.
So .... in my 2002 sabbatical I decided to investigate this treasure more thoroughly. I published the results in a recent paper.
I highly recommend this paper to lecturers teaching subjects related to decision making under uncertainty.
