My next Sabbatical
It is public knowledge that, like most other academics in Australia ... I have been overworked and underpaid for many years. I shall therefore not dwell on this sad story here.
But I took advantage of the "Sabbatical Leave" scheme to go on extended visits to academic institutions oversees. This was both enjoyable and professionally beneficial and rewarding.
Now that I have retired, I am on a long sabbatical "leave"! I plan to continue my research and other academic activities. So this year the destination is the always beautiful ... Rio de Janeiro where I taught my favorite subject (dynamic programming) to young graduate students. I am happy to report that the 2nd edition of my DP book is now available!
My next project in this area is a "soft" introduction to the art and science of Dynamic Programming.
Regarding next year:
I'll consider any reasonable proposal, especially from individuals and/or organisations in Australia and the neighborhood.
In addition to teaching and research in my areas of expertise, other possible topics I offer to research/teach during my sabbatical are the following:
- I seek contacts with people in OR who are interested in developing teaching material for the World Wide Web. In this context I'll be glad to give workshops/courses on this topic and to develop web modules to suit your special needs.
- With regard to my work on Composite Concave Programming, I am interested in collaborating with LP/QP software developers on the development of commercial Composite Concave Linear Programming software.
- My favorite research area is still Dynamic Programming. I thus offer to share my expertise with analysts interested in the modelling aspects of DP and in particular in the relationship between DP, branch and bound and constraint programming. I am also interested in the development of user friendly, commercial, (almost) general-purpose DP software.
- I have recently initiated a campaign to promote "responsible" use of Worst-Case Analysis and Wald's Maximin Principle and similar non-probabilistic methodologies in decision-making under severe uncertainty. If you are interested in decision-making under severe uncertainty you might be interested in joining this campaign.

This is an exciting development!
- Ben-Haim's response confirms my assessment of Info-Gap. It is clear that Info-Gap is fundamentally flawed and therefore unsuitable for decision-making under severe uncertainty.
- Ben-Haim is not familiar with the fundamental concept point estimate. He does not realize that a function can be a point estimate of another function.
So when you read my papers make sure that you do not misinterpret the notion point estimate. The phrase "A is a point estimate of B" simply means that A is an element of the same topological space that B belongs to. Thus, if B is say a probability density function and A is a point estimate of B, then A is a probability density function belonging to the same (assumed) set (family) of probability density functions.
Ben-Haim mistakenly assumes that a point estimate is a point in a Euclidean space and therefore a point estimate cannot be say a function. This is incredible!
- A formal proof that Info-Gap is Wald's Maximin Principle in disguise. (December 31, 2006)
This is a very short article entitled Eureka! Info-Gap is Worst Case (maximin) in Disguise! (PDF File)
It shows that Info-Gap is not a new theory but rather a simple instance of Wald's famous Maximin Principle dating back to 1945, which in turn goes back to von Neumann's work on Maximin problems in the context of Game Theory (1928).
